Horror Movies to Watch Now on Shudder

Who else has been on the search for something to watch while self-quarantining due to COVID-19? I haven't left the house for days while trying to do my part to help halt the spread of the disease, so I have definitely been on the hunt for movies to watch. I've already shared lists of some of my favorite horror films streaming now on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, but I also wanted to share recommendations from Shudder, who in my opinion has the best curated horror selection! And guess what?! In an effort to bring some joy to horror fans during this trying time, Shudder is offering a FREE 30-day trial for new members with the code SHUTIN. Believe me, if you are a horror fan you will love Shudder!

You can spend hours browsing through Shudder's film collection, but I've compiled a list of my top recommendations to save you the time. Check out my recommendations for horror movies streaming on Shudder as of March 19th, 2020 in the US below!

Horror Movies to Watch Now on Hulu

I'm back with a third installment of horror movies to watch on streaming platforms, this time featuring Hulu (check out my posts on Netflix and Amazon Prime that were previously posted). With it being such a scary time in the world, we must all do our part to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus, which includes staying away from others. For most of us that means staying at home and entertaining ourselves with movies! Horror movies are my favorite escape, I've rounded up some of the best ones that are now streaming on Hulu in the US as of March 16th, 2020. Check them out below!

Horror Movies to Watch Now on Netflix

As we all spend more and more time at home until the COVID-19 virus pandemic is contained, we are all looking for something to pass the time and something to take our minds off the troubles of the world. I've been escaping reality by watching horror movies and have been spending a lot of time searching Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and more looking for something to watch. No doubt you have been doing the same thing, so I wanted to make things a little easier for you by sharing a list of recommended horror movies you can stream now (at least in the US as of March 15th, 2020).

In addition to a list of horror films to stream on Amazon Prime I shared recently, I wanted to also post a list of horror movies available on Netflix! While Netflix doesn't have as much horror as other platforms might, there are still many great titles on the streaming service. Whether you are looking for something new (or something new to you) or want to revisit an old favorite, there are plenty of horror films to watch now on Netflix, check them out below:

Horror Movies to Watch Now on Amazon Prime

Many people (including myself) are keeping to themselves and staying home in order to help halt the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. That means that many of us are looking for entertainment to pass the days and nights at home. I've spent long hours scrolling through Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Shudder, and so forth to find something to watch, and I figured why not share the fruits of my labor with others who are seeking to temporarily escape our scary reality.

Below, you'll find horror films streaming on Amazon Prime (in the USA as of March 14th, 2020) that I recommend. Amazon Prime has a lot of excellent horror films available to stream for free (if you have an Amazon Prime membership) from all eras and sub-genres, from 1920's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to recent films like Midsommar. The films listed below are ones I personally recommend, from silly to gruesome to scary and everything in-between! I've added dates to some of the titles to differentiate them from remakes/originals or other films with the same name.

I hope the following is helpful to you when seeking out horror films to watch on Amazon Prime (and check out my lists for Netflix and Hulu too!).

Watch Now on Netflix: Diablero (2018)

In this Netflix series from Mexico, a young priest enlists the help of a demon hunter and a paranormal expert to search for a kidnapped girl in the underworld of Mexico City. The trailer made it look like a high-octane version of the Supernatural TV show, full of demons, car chases, fun characters, witchcraft, and action, so I was intrigued. As soon as I started watching, I was hooked!

Watch Now on Netflix: Veronica (2017)

Veronica just hit Netflix streaming and I had heard mostly positive buzz about this supernatural horror film, so I couldn't wait to watch it! It is directed and co-written by Paco Plaza, who is most know for his [REC] movies (he co-directed the first and second of these films with Jaume Balagueró before directing the third film solo) as well as directing the excellent The Christmas Tale segment in the Films to Keep You Awake series. I really enjoyed the [REC] films and The Christmas Tale, so I was interested to see how he would handle a more supernatural-style film.

Watch Now on Netflix: The Ritual (2018)

I read Adam Nevill's The Ritual last year, and it made me eagerly look forward to the film adaptation (which was one of my most-anticipated films of 2018), which just hit Netflix Friday, February 9th. The book's first half was terrifying, and I couldn't wait to see such nightmarish visions come to life on the screen as imagined by director David Bruckner (who gave us strong segments in V/H/S and The Signal).

Watch Now on Netflix: Haunters - The Art of the Scare (2017)

I know we are all missing Halloween, so I was delighted to find Haunters - The Art of the Scare, which is a documentary about Halloween haunts and haunt owners, streaming on Netflix! It comes at a time when I really needed a Halloween pick-me-up, and this documentary provided exactly that.

Synopsis: Haunters is a heart-warming and heart-stopping documentary about people who sacrifice everything to create the most popular and polarizing haunted houses for Halloween - from boo-scare mazes to a controversial new subculture of extreme terror experiences.

Watch Now on Netflix: The Babysitter (2017)

The Babysitter hit Netflix on Friday, October 13th and I couldn't wait watch it! This horror comedy stars a young cast including Samara Weaver, Bella Thorne, and Judah Lewis and is about a young kid who finds out something disturbing about his babysitter - that's basically all I knew going in when I gave it a look over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had watching it! It has a fun '80s slasher vibe while still managing to feel fresh. Plus, it's not afraid to poke a little fun at the horror genre. Check out more of my thoughts on it below.

Watch Now on Netflix: Boys in the Trees

This coming-of-age drama from Australia gives us a glimpse of how Halloween is celebrated down under, and it is gorgeous. It is also set in the '90s, so we get some nostalgic tunes from Presidents of the United States, Marilyn Manson, Bush, and more. The Halloween imagery has a distinct vintage feel, especially with the costumes some creepy kids wear in the opening scenes as well as the Halloween decorations used throughout the film. It features some truly eerie scenes and blends fantasy with elements of horror, coming-of-age tale, and drama to create a beautiful but heartbreaking film. Read more about Boys in Trees below!

Watch Now on Netflix: Raw

Stop everything you're doing and go watch Raw on Netflix now! It is one of my favorite films I've seen this year, and I am so excited that it is finally on Netflix so it can reach a wider audience. This French-Belgian film was brave, bold, and had plenty of cringe-worthy moments throughout.

Watch Now on Netflix: The Devil's Candy (2015)

I was so excited to see that Netflix added The Devil's Candy to their instant streaming catalog! I had been looking forward to seeing it since early 2016 (where I had it as one of my most anticipated movies of 2016). Even though it technically had a 2015 release (probably at film festivals), it was really hard to track down, though I think it was available on Amazon at the beginning of 2017.

I really enjoyed writer/director Sean Byrne's last film The Loved Ones, so I couldn't wait to see The Devil's Candy. As soon as I saw it pop up on Netflix I dimmed the lights, lit a few candles, and snuggled up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn to finally watch The Devil's Candy!

Watch Now on Netflix: The Worst Witch (2017)

Netflix recently released the TV series The Worst Witch, based off the series of books (said to be the inspiration behind the Harry Potter series) by Jill Murphy first published in 1974 and most well-known for the 1986 made-for-TV film starring a young Fairuza Balk and featuring an unforgettable Halloween musical number by Tim Curry. There are various other film and TV adaptations, but I've only seen the 1986 version, which has a sweet, quirky, and cheesy charm.

Watch Now on Netflix: American Fable (2016)

This fantasy thriller was a film I had very much been looking forward to seeing since I saw the trailer. Its portrait of rural Americana in the 1980s tinged with a fantasy atmosphere appealed to me partly due to the fact that I grew up on a rural ranch and seemed I would identify with the young lead. It also looked beautiful and the fantasy elements made me even more intrigued.

Watch Now on Netflix: XX (2017)

I am so behind on my Netflix recommendations, please accept my apologies! Netflix doesn't seem to be releasing many new horror movies lately, but there are still some gems to be found. I recently revisited the horror anthology film XX, which was added to Netflix streaming not too long ago. This horror anthology is unique in that each segment is directed by a woman and each story is told from a female point of view. I had seen it previously but remember being underwhelmed. However, I decided to give it another shot and actually liked it a lot better the second time around!

Watch Now on Netflix: Okja (2017)

I finally mustered up the courage to watch the Netflix original film Okja - I heard it could be a very emotional film, so this past Friday night I curled up on the couch with some popcorn, my cat Havoc, and plenty of tissues. Now, I normally stick to recommending horror movies to watch, but since this film was so powerful (and contains some horrific elements) I think everyone should watch it. More on my thoughts on it below.

Watch Now on Netflix: The Windmill

Judging from its cover, trailer snippet, and description on Netflix, The Windmill looked like a run-of-the-mill (no pun intended) slasher flick, so when I settled in to watch it I was expecting a mediocre horror flick, something I could put on in the background while I fiddled on my phone one evening. To my surprise, I was sucked into the movie and actually found it fun and entertaining!

Synopsis: A rag-tag group of tourists in Holland board an old bus for a tour of the country's famous windmills. When their tour bus breaks down, they become stranded by an ominous old windmill and those with dark secrets are picked off one by one by a malevolent miller.

Watch Now on Netflix: Train to Busan (2016)

I saw Train to Busan last year (it got an honorable mention on my Top 10 Horror Films of 2016), but it has finally come to Netflix where hopefully more people will be able to see it! This Korean zombie flick is action-packed with wonderful character development and some truly gut-wrenching scenes.

It is about a man and his young daughter who become trapped with many other passengers on a speeding train while a zombie outbreak occurs in South Korea. They must battle hordes of infected zombies as they speed their way through a quickly deteriorating Korea to one last stronghold in the city of Busan.

Watch Now On Netflix: I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore (2017)

Last Friday Netflix released Macon Blair's directorial debut I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore, which was one of my most anticipated movies of 2017. It's a quirky revenge thriller about a woman who has had it with our rude, self-centered society, and is pushed to the brink when her house is robbed. When the cops can't help her, she takes things into her own hands to track down the robbers. She enlists her socially-inept neighbor and together they find the robbers, but also realize they may be in way over their heads.
