Food Review: Gardein Mini Crispy Crabless Cakes

Earlier this year at Expo West, I remember trying Gardein's new Mini Crispy Crabless Cakes and thinking that I couldn't wait for them to be available in stores! Well, I after many months of dreaming about them, I finally found them for sale at Fresh and Easy! I remember their texture and flavor being really great, so I couldn't wait to make them at home to see if they were as good as I remember them tasting.

They come 10 crabless cakes to a bag, and as soon as I got home I popped them in my toaster oven. They bake up really easily and quickly, so I was enjoying them in no time at all! To be honest, I never really liked/ate crab cakes back in my pre-vegan days, so I really can't vouch for how close these came in texture/taste. However, that is where my lovely assistant, Mister Spooky, comes in, as he is a big crab cake aficionado. I'll include his thoughts below...

They were crisped up quite nicely when I pulled them from the oven, and as soon as they cooled a bit I gave one (served plain, with no sauce or garnish) to Mister Spooky to try. His eyes lit up as soon as he popped the morsel in his mouth and said "it's just like the 'real' thing!". Same flavor, same texture, just none of the cruelty! He stated he wants to definitely buy these again (he also loves Gardein's fishless filets).

I had one too, and really liked the flavor/texture as well. I tried one plain, another dunked in vegan tartar sauce, and the bulk of them on a salad dressed with just some lemon, salt and pepper, and peach salsa. My favorite method was in the salad, as the crabless cake flavor really mixed well with the dressings, especially the peach salsa! And I think these would be perfect as appetizers for a party (or just yourself) or in tacos, burritos, etc. And they are so adorable that I can't resist calling them Crabby Cakes!

The Gardein Mini Crispy Crabless Cakes can be found in the frozen section of grocery stores (note: the only grocery store I've seen them in so far is Fresh and Easy).

You can find more information on them via Gardein's site!

  1. I would like to know more about the ingredients, especially the salt content.
