Jack-o-Punkin Halloween Puppets by FoamFoolery

How cool is this custom-carved and handmade Halloween puppet by FoamFoolery? I have never seen anything quite like it and it is so unique! This spooktacular Jack-o-Punkin puppet was sent to me by Seth Chappell, the creator and puppeteer behind FoamFoolery, a company that specializes in making custom puppets. Seth makes custom puppets for clients and is behind many puppets inspired by metal musicians. His puppets were featured in an Author and Punisher video and he also creates his own metal videos with his puppet band Throwing Goats, with some pretty big guest stars from metal providing music for the videos (check out FoamFoolery on YouTube)!

31 Days of Halloween Movies

Join me for 31 Days of Halloween Movies! I'll be watching a movie that is
Halloween-themed or evokes a Halloween and/or autumn feel this October.

You know what a pet peeve of mine is? When people put together Halloween movie lists which just end up being lists of a bunch of horror movies that have nothing to do with Halloween! I watch horror movies all year round, so these "Halloween" movie lists make no sense to me and annoy me.

When I make a Halloween movie list, I only include movies that actually have Halloween in them! I want films that give me those Halloween feels, that feature autumn foliage, trick-or-treating, costumes, jack-o-lanterns, and all the other Halloween things! Doesn't that make much more sense than just a random list of horror movies?

Since I keep seeing so many horror movie lists for October, I decided that I would share my own list of Halloween-themed movies I plan on watching this October. I plan on watching at least one a day the whole month of October (I already watched my first pick yesterday). I have selected movies set during Halloween or that evoke a Halloween feel. Many of the films I chose are horror movies, but there are also kid-friendly ones, a few comedies, and even a TV show (that basically plays like a movie) to keep things interesting and fun.

If you want to surround yourself with autumn atmosphere, join me in watching these movies that are either set in or around Halloween or evoke an autumn atmosphere. Check out my 31 Halloween movie selections below!

Food Review: Love Grown Foods' New Kids Cereal

I absolutely LOVE cereal. It seems silly to say, but eating a big bowl of cereal makes me feel like a kid again and I usually choose cereals that are geared more towards kids that usually have a cute, cuddly animal on the box. So when Love Grown Foods offered me a chance to check out their three new kids cereals, I was pretty stoked!

Creepy Crawly Bug Bite Appetizers

Bug Bites plus Spiderweb Dipping Sauce

These plump little critters are perfect for your next Halloween get-together! They are so easy to make, require few ingredients, and even the kiddos (and kids-at-heart) find them fun to assemble!

I found the recipe in the Betty Crocker Halloween Cookbook, though it obviously wasn't vegan-friendly. Well, a few quick swaps of ingredients and it was easily veganized! You can find the cruelty-free, dairy-free, veganized recipe below:

Watch Now on Netflix: Spooksville Season One

I loooooove spooky kid shows so I was really excited to see Spooksville on Netflix! It's a mix of Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, Goosebumps, R.L. Stine's Haunting Hour, plus some Goonies thrown in! However, it is not an anthology series, and instead it follows three teens in their fight against the dark forces at work in their small town of Springville, aka Spooksville, leading them on daring adventures.

This is a really great show full of quirky characters, fantastic monsters/creatures/creepy-crawlies/witches, really cool special FX, unique episodic storylines and an engaging wrap-around story! I was hooked from the moment I started watching and binge-watched the whole season one that's currently streaming on Netflix.

The show is based on Christopher Pike's line of young adult books of the same name. I was thrilled to see Pike's name since I devoured Pike's books as a kid, along with the books of R.L. Stine and Stephen King. I always thought Pike's books were more mature than Stine's (and therefore more thrilling), and I really like how well they translated to the screen. His protagonists always felt more real to me than Stine's sometimes cartoonish characters, and in this show I love the dynamic of the trio of friends and how genuine it feels. The actors did such a fantastic job in keeping the audience rooting for them, which I know sounds weird for a kid's show, but that's what makes the show so great even for adults to watch!

The Hub Network (never heard of it, but then again I don't have cable) premiered Spooksville back in October 2013, and it looks like there is currently only one season of it available (boo). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this show gets picked up again (according to Spooksville's Facebook page, there is talk that Netflix may pick it up for more seasons if it performs well, so go check it out now!!).

You can watch season one of Spooksville now on Netflix streaming!

If you don't have Netflix, you can also purchase it on Amazon!

31 Days of Halloween: Vegan Candy for Halloween

Every year it seems that we get more and more vegan candy options to hand out to trick or treaters, to serve at parties, or to munch on ourselves! I have an insatiable sweet tooth, so I am always prepared with lots of vegan candy options come Halloween. I like to hand out some to trick or treaters (if any stop by),  but mostly I end up eating it myself or sharing with friends when they come over for pumpkin carving parties or horror movie nights!

31 Days of Halloween: Retro Halloween Costumes from the '70s and '80s

A while back, I finally got my hands on Ossian Brown's stunning book Haunted Air (review), which is just packed with vintage Halloween costume photos. There is something both disturbing and nostalgic about these old images of witches, hobos, ghosts, vampires and monsters.

While unsettling, I could stare at photos like this every day! So I scoured the world wide web for some of the coolest and creepiest vintage photos, and decided that since Brown's book doesn't show photos from the '70s or '80s, I decided to post some here!

So. Much. Awesome.

Love the bloodied up zombie in the back! OMG and that green McDonald's pail
the little witch is holding!

Adorable Ghostbuster

This is what friendship wooks like

I have fond memories of both She-Ra and the Fuzzles, so love both of these!

Unexpectedly creepy Lambchop

Watch your back!

There is just something so OFF about this photo...I think it is the weird
plastic masks and I don't even know who the little girl is supposed to be (maybe
Bionic Woman?)

The creepiest part of this Rainbow Brite costume is the placement of the eye holes.

Alf!

Gory Gear Review: LilWickIdz Zombie Plushes

Ooooh I love my fiendish finds of creepy cute stuff! I was recently contacted by the creator of LilWickIdz plushes to check out her line of eerily adorable undead dolls! These handmade zombie dolls instantly stole my heart (and brains too), especially with names like Angst, Misery, Dementia, Mischief, Rancid and Madness!

Of course, my favorite would have to be Zoe, a vegetarian zombie. According to the LilWickIdz website:
"Zoe is a misfit Zombie. She doesn’t quite fit in with the other Zombies. It might be her upbeat attitude or maybe it’s because she’s a vegetarian. She finds it equally as difficult to fit in with the living, on account of her being dead. But she won’t let being different stop her from being happy. If you give her a chance she promises not to have your brains for a midnight snack, as long as they don’t smell like vegetables. If I was you, I’d use your brain everyday…it wouldn’t be good to become a vegetable!"
Zoe and I would be such good friends!

Zoe and the other LilWickIdz need a pet, so this is where Stitches, the zombie cat, comes in:
"Digging up zombies.
Harassing the living.
Serenading the moon off key.
Biting your toes while you sleep.
Playing peek-a-boo with the monster under your bed.

Straight from his grave and into your arms, Stitches may look nice and clean, but don’t be fooled, he won’t stay that way for long. With time he will require additional stitching and mending. Don’t worry, he doesn’t mind a little pain, as long as you provide a lot of tasty brains."
There are many other LilWickIdz characters to check out on the website and any of the creations would make a fabulously fearsome addition to any spooky kids collection.

Another awesome thing about LilWickIdz is that it is run completely by a family of four, including mom, dad and two teenage daughters! Everyone helps out, including ideas for designs, photography, running the website and creating the dolls.

Support this family-run company by checking out their website and digging up some LilWickIdz of your own!

31 Days of Halloween: Halloween Movies for Kids and Kids-at-Heart (Part 2)

Halloween brings out the kid in me, and since last year's post on Halloween movies for kids and kids-at-heart was so popular, I decided to do a part two! Below you'll find a list of some frightfully fun movies, cartoons and specials perfect for family-viewing on Halloween!

RL Stine's The Haunting Hour: Don't Think About It (2007)

For 13-year-old goth girl Cassie, fitting into a new school and neighborhood isn't easy, but she entertains herself by playing pranks on the "popular" kids and her little brother, Max. As Halloween approaches, Cassie's search for scares leads her to a mysterious Halloween store and an unusual book called The Evil Thing. When Max begs her to read the book to him, Cassie finally gives in, ignoring the warning "Do Not Read Aloud." But it's when they get to the last page of the book and its clear warning about the Evil Thing - "Don't Think About It" - that the spooky adventure really begins.

I love the gothling babybat character of Cassie in this tween flick! Plus, it features Tobin Bell of Saw fame and a great R.L. Stine spook-tale!

Buy it on Amazon!

Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)

Everybody's favorite know-it-all, Ernest P. Worrell, scares up heaps of hilarious laughs in this frightfully funny comedy! The loveable lunkhead is in for a devil of a time when he accidentally unleashes an evil demon from its sacred tomb, causing the awakened foe to go on a devastating rampage. Ernest desperately attempts to prevent the destruction of town, but a 200-year-old curse renders Ernest Scared Stupid! And that's when the fun and adventure begin! Loaded with uproarious hilarity, and a host of outrageously kooky characters, this big-screen treat delivers off-the-wall nuttiness that's sure to drive you wild any time of the year!

If you are looking for more slapstick than spook this holiday season, definitely check out this silly flick! However, I do have a friend who swears the trolls in this movie give her nightmares and she still cannot watch it to this day!

Buy it on Amazon!

Bugs Bunny's Howl-O-Ween Special (1978)

The wascally wabbit encounters dimwitted witches and vacant vampires in this merry romp.

You cannot go wrong with Bugs Bunny's antics this Halloween! Who can forget Witch Hazel or Gossamer?! For an added bonus, check out "Hyde and Hare", Looney Toons' take on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!

Buy it on Amazon!

Goosebumps: Attack of the Jack-O-Lanterns

This DVD contains three episodes from R.L Stine's popular Goosebumps series, but the one of note is the titular "Attack of the Jack-O'-Lanterns". The story follows four young kids as they go out trick-or-treating, but a night of treats turns into tricks as the friends face off against several sinister jack-o-lanterns.

Yes, this is a low-budget take on R.L. Stine's tale, but its heart makes up for its horrible effects and small budget!

Buy it on Amazon!

Tower of Terror (1997)

A hard-luck photojournalist whose unexpected encounter with an old woman leads him to investigate an unexplained, decades-old disappearance. It seems that one Halloween night, many years ago, five partygoers vanished in the elevator of the Hollywood Tower Hotel ... and ever since, their ghosts have remained trapped inside the dilapidated old building! In an action-filled story that delivers creepy fun for everyone, Buzzy ultimately teams with his niece to solve the mystery while managing to save their lives and capture the biggest story of the year!

This is an often overlooked film that set at Halloween time in a haunted hotel that has been abandoned since tragedy struck there year's ago. Full of ghosts and action, this is a fun film to watch this time of year!

Buy it on Amazon!

Happy Birthday, Richard Scarry!

Richard Scarry's illustrated books were HUGE in my house growing up and were a huge influence on me while I was learning to read as a wee one. I loved the colorful illustrations of his books and his animal characters were plucky and fun friends for this widely imaginative kid. I especially adored Lowly the Worm.

Lowly RULES!

Plus, I always wanted Richard's last name, which is THE COOLEST EVER!!

So, when I found out it was Richard Scarry's birthday today (thanks, Google!), I just had to give a quick shout-out. Scarry would have been 92 today, but he sadly passed away in 1994. He definitely helped (and continues to help) children learn how to read with his fun, creative books.

I loved his books as a kid, and was pleased to find he actually has a Halloween book out, called The Best Halloween Masquerade Ever as well as a Halloween video called The First Halloween Ever!

Richard Scarry + Halloween = BRILLIANT!

I just wish he had done more Halloween-themed stuff, but the two above will have to suffice.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Scarry, and thank you for filling my childhood with your delightful books!

31 Days of Halloween: Halloween Movies for Kids and Kids-at-Heart

Halloween always brings out the kid in me. I'm sure most of you feel the same way! The excitement...the wonder...the eagerness...the pure, unadulterated joy we feel when autumn rolls around! This holiday, more than any other, really brings out the kid in me. I am pure energy this time of year, just giddy with excitement for the hallowed holiday of All Hallow's Eve!

And so, along with my innocent wonder at all things ooky and spooky, I crave the comforts of kids' Halloween flicks! This time of year I am all over any kind of cartoon, movie or TV show that is made for children and prominently features Halloween in its story or setting. I still like my Halloween-flavored adult horror flicks, but the Halloween productions made for kids really speak to my feelings of nostalgia around this time of year.

So, without further ado, below you will find a few of my favorite Halloween movies for kids and kids-at-heart. I discover new ones every year, so this isn't a definitive list...if you have suggestions please post a comment! Also note that some kid-friendly horror films like Nightmare Before Christmas, Hocus Pocus, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and so on have already appeared on my list of Top 13 Halloween Movies. I didn't want to "double-dip" with my lists, so I've omitted these previously listed choices from this particular list.

Lady in White (1988)

Locked in a school closet during Halloween 1962, young Frank witnesses the ghost of a young girl and the man who murdered her years ago. Shortly afterward he finds himself stalked by the killer and is soon drawn to an old house where a mysterious Lady In White lives. As he discovers the secret of the woman he soon finds that the killer may be someone close to him. (via IMDB.com)

Lady in White is a charming ghost story that is spooky without being overtly frightening. This is a PG-13 movie, and while it may not be suitable for kids under 13, I think kids-at-heart will enjoy the nostalgia of experiencing autumn small town when growing up. I love watching this film during Halloween, especially seeing Frankie in his costume as well as the bright, fall colors around the small town.

Sadly, "The Raven" from Season 2 isn't
included on the Treehouse of Horror DVD

The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror

In this annual trilogy of terror, Homer attempts to kill his family in "The Shinning," Homer tries to fix a toaster and winds up altering the fabric of time itself in "Time and Punishment," and Principal Skinner serves students for lunch in "Nightmare Cafeteria." In this Halloween-themed anthology, advertising icons go berserk in "Attack of the 50 Foot Eyesores," Groundskeeper Willie invades the children's dreams in "Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace," and Homer enters a 3-D world of computer animation in "Homer 3." This Simpson showcase features a terrifying look at Bart's evil twin in "The Thing and I," Lisa creating a miniature world in "The Genesis Tub," and aliens stealing the identities of Bill Clinton and Bob Dole in "Mr. Kang Goes To Washington." In "Hex and the City," a gypsy curses Homer, bringing misery to everyone he loves. In "House of Whacks," a computer (Pierce Brosnan) takes over the Simpson house and attempts to kill Homer for Marge's love. And in "Wiz Kids," Bart and Lisa are students at a school for wizards, where they foil the evil Lord Montymort. (via Amazon)

Gotta love The Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors! I love watching this DVD every year, though I wish they would release another DVD of that was a collection of ALL the Simpsons' Halloween episodes! Can someone please get on that?

Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)

On a grim and gusty October day, two young boys encounter a distressed man who foretells of danger blowing their way. Soon after, the town is visited by a seductive stranger named Mr. Dark and his Pandemonium Carnival. Terrifying things begin to happen when the adventurous boys stumble onto the carnival's deadly and destructive secret! Beware: SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES...and frightening surprises follow! (via Amazon)

Ray Bradbury's great novel comes to exuberant life in this film, and his words just swirl around you like blood-red October leaves! Everyone, from the child actors to the adults, do a fantastic job, plus the film has a creepy vibe that works beautifully with its autumnal atmosphere. Definitely one of my favorite "kids' movies" to watch in October!

The Halloween Tree (1993)

Based on Ray Bradbury's book, The Halloween Tree tells the story of four close friends who must face their greatest fears as they travel through time to save their dear comrade, Pip. It's Halloween night, Pip's favorite holiday, and the friends are baffled to spot his spirit running through the woods when they've just seen his body hauled off in an ambulance. Mustering their courage, they follow the spirit and meet Moundshroud (Nimoy), the mysterious black-caped proprietor of a haunted house. Moundshroud challenges them each to gain a deeper understanding of the origins of this ghostly holiday as he leads them on an educational journey through faraway places and time periods. From Egyptian sarcophaguses to Mexican graveyards, the children learn the legends behind Halloween and the importance they place on their friendship with Pip. (via Amazon)

Another undisputed Bradbury classic is The Halloween Tree. This animated cartoon, based on another Bradbury tale, is a Hanna-Barbera made-for-TV production that is shown on The Cartoon Network. For some ungodly reason, this sweet, nostalgic and beautifully illustrated animation has never been released on DVD (for SHAME Warner Brothers!!) and is currently only available on VHS. However, it is very, very much worth the trouble to seek it out and watch...not only is it gorgeous, but it has a wonderful message: always respect the traditions of Halloween!

Halloweentown series (Halloweentown/ Halloweentown II, Halloweentown High, Return to Halloweentown)

I had never seen this series before (the lead actress just bugs me), but now I'm glad I watched them! Despite my dislike for the lead (I don't even know why I don't like her...I just don't), these are cute movies with tons of cool Halloween decorations and costumes. Yes, they are Disney and there aren't any scares, but they are just plain fun!! How can you turn down a film set in a place called "Halloweentown" anyways??

I like all of the films in the series, but I especially like the last two, Halloweentown High and Return to Halloweentown. They just seem better put together (and look better) than the first two. However, I also really like the first one because it takes more time to explore Halloweentown and the second one because of two great Halloween party scenes it features! So really, you can't go wrong with any of the Halloweentown flicks!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949)

In a small town named Sleepy Hollow, a gangly schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane comes to town. Despite his unattractive appearance, he quickly proves to be a ladies man who charms the local beauty, much to the local tough, Brom Bones', displeasure. A subtle rivalry erupts, only to have Crane continually gaining the upper hand. The situation changes when Brom learns of Crane's superstitions and exploits them as he musically tells the legend of the fearsome Headless Horseman to frighten the teacher. That night, Crane's lonely night ride home becomes more lively than he ever imagined as the Horseman appears to chase him. (via IMDB.com)

Washington Irving's classic tale comes to life in this animated re-telling by Disney. From the funny bits where Brom is unsuccessfully trying to get rid of Ichabod to the thrilling chase climax, this is a another fun animated film to watch in October!

When Good Ghouls Go Bad (2001)

Twelve-year-old Danny Walker is shocked to learn that the small Minnesota town he just moved to can't celebrate Halloween because of a local curse centered on the "accidental" death of a local boy called Curtis Danko. With the help of his recently deceased (but still kicking) Uncle Fred, Danny must battle an army of prankster ghouls rising from the ground to break the curse once and for all - and bring back the magic of Halloween. (via Amazon)

 Curtis Danko, I *heart* you!

Based on an R.L. Stine book of the same name, WGGGB is a fun and innocent Halloween tale with lots of atmosphere, kooky characters (Christopher Lloyd plays the kid-at-heart Uncle Fred) and even a young goth "villain" by the name of Curtis Danko who was killed in an "accident" and is out for justice against his killers. The creature design for Danko is especially neat...he is resurrected and comes back as a skeleton with glowing green eyes. Yes, it's pretty low-budget, but at least the effects are mostly practical and the film has a wonderfully Halloween-y vibe that's quick to get you into the spirit!

Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985)

Garfield's Halloween Adventure finds the portly hero and airhead-sidekick Odie the dog scrounging through owner Jon's attic to find perfect costumes, then going trick or treating where they stray a little far from home and encounter a scary old man who steals their candy and locks them in his haunted house to deal with some menacing ghosts!

Even after all these years I STILL love this cartoon! Garfield was a very big deal for me growing up, and so the nostalgia this cartoon brings back is just priceless. The creepy old man (as seen above) scared the poo outta me as a kid, and he still freaks me out as an adult! I also think the spirits in the cartoon are pretty spooky.

Of course, there are several other must-see Halloween movies for kids and kids-at-heart, but they are included on my list of Top 13 Halloween Movies! Go check it out!

Also, check out PART 2 of this list, which includes even more movies, TV shows and specials for kids and kids-at-heart!
