The Raven's Trailer Releases on the Anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's Death

Though The Raven won't be released until March 7th, 2012, Relativity Media has released the latest trailer for the horror thriller just in time to commemorate the death of Edgar Allan Poe, which happened 162 years today!

I have to say, the trailer looks pretty good and has me excited to see the film next spring. Check it out yourself below and let me know what you think!

For more info (and some fun facts about Poe), check out Relativity Media's press release below!

About The Raven:

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper—part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Did You Know? Some Unusual Facts about Poe, the “Enigmatic Master of Darkness”:

• Poe wrote a fabricated news story of a balloon trip across the ocean to garner attention and publicity in New York City.

• Poe was a champion for higher wages for writers and international copyright law, as his writings were continuously published without him getting credit or compensation.

• Prior to becoming Poe’s wife at the age of 13, his female cousin Virginia acted as a courier, delivering letters to Poe’s lady loves.

• From 1949 to 2009, a mysterious figure has left a half-empty bottle of cognac and 3 roses on Poe’s grave every day on his birthday.

• Poe formulated rules for the short story, including that it should relate a complete action and take place within one day in one place.

• Poe was deeply interested by cryptography, the creation and translation of secret codes, and was very proud of his ability to translate them. He would challange readers of various publications where he worked to send him codes to decipher and, by all accounts, he seemed able to unlock the secrets to any he received.

• Poe’s lifelong dream of owning and operating his own publication never came to fruition.

• Poe met with Charles Dickens while Dickens was in the US on a lecture tour, and solicited his help with getting published in England—nothing ever came of it.

• Poe’s grandfather was an important figure in the American Revolution, contributing a large sum of his own money to outfit local branches of the Continental Army. His wife, Poe’s grandmother, personally sewed over 500 soldiers’ uniforms for Lafayette’s troops as they passed through Baltimore.

• Poe joined the Army in 1827, lying to recruiters about his age and name. He also published his first collection of poetry during this time. He achieved the rank of Sergeant Major.

• Poe experienced periods of extreme destitution, often having to burn his furniture to keep warm during the winter.

• Poe successfully sought expulsion from West Point. That being said, he was one of the top students in his class.

• Poe’s childhood hero was Lord Byron.

• Wrote poetic tributes to all the pivotal women in his life.

• Poe had two biological siblings, but all were raised in separate foster homes.

• The Poe House and Museum in Baltimore is in jeopardy of being closed in mid-2012 due to Baltimore City budget cuts. The city eliminated the Museum’s funding in 2010.

• Edgar Allan Poe was buried in Westminster Burying Ground and had no headstone for years after his death. In 1860, Poe’s relatives commissioned a small headstone that erroneously listed Poe’s birth date as January 20 instead of January 19 and was destroyed in a train accident before it made it to the gravesite.

• In 1875 Poe’s remains were dug up and moved to a memorial site to be near his family and a gravestone was placed in the wrong spot and was moved around several times. This lead people to wonder not only where Poe’s original burial spot was but also if the man who was moved to the spot by the memorial is even Edgar Allan Poe.

31 Days of Halloween: Candy (2010) Short Film

Candy is a short film that is just a perfect bite-sized treat for Halloween! Directed by Sage Hall and written by Jesse Kozel and Jenny Beres (all of which who star in the film), this short six minute film is visually stunning, mixing themes from noir, horror and even avant garde.

Set on Halloween night, it seems that Candy (Sage Hall) has created quite a spread of Halloween sweets for her son, Marcus (Jesse Kozel). Marcus is kind of a mama’s boy, though he seems fed up with Candy’s overbearing nature. Marcus has invited a “date” over, which irks Candy. However, to get back at her son she befriends the girl (Jenny Beres)…only, she doesn’t like the girl’s mouthy attitude and things soon get out of hand…

This is a beautiful and artistically made film! The black and white visuals really pop, especially with the use of Halloween decorations. It visuals really give it a retro feel, much like the vintage-inspired poster above. I also think the June Cleaver-like Candy character adds to its ‘50s style charm. However, it’s not all sweet…this short definitely has some bite to it!

I adored the conniving and evil character of Candy. Sage Hall played her perfectly, without going over the top. Plus the nice little open-ended twist at the end was great! Jesse Kozel also did a commendable job playing the loser Marcus and Jenny Beres was good as Marcus’ foul-mouthed date.

I also must mention the music, done by Abnorml Injustice, which was extremely atmospheric and added to the wonderful feel of the film. The music and visuals complemented each other superbly!

Considering this is a low-budget short film, I am amazed at the care that went into the details of the score, the set design, even the costumes! The filmmakers must truly be commended for making such a fun and breathtaking short!

Director Sage Hall has created a truly memorable Halloween-themed short film that’s visually striking, has a wonderful cast (herself included) and appears extremely polished and professional. No tricks here, this sweet treat is exactly what you want dropped into your Halloween bag!

31 Days of Halloween: A Visit to the Pumpkin Patch

One of my absolutely favorite places in the world is the pumpkin patch! Every first weekend of October I head to opening of Tanaka Farms pumpkin patch in Irvine, CA. It's a vibrant working farm in the otherwise drab suburbia of Orange County (where I reside). They are open year-round, and besides their annual pumpkin patch they also feature lots of other events, including their summer watermelon tours!

Last weekend, Mister Spooky and I took our annual trip to the pumpkin patch at Tanaka Farms, and though it was a little warm we had a fabulous time! The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and fields upon fields of pumpkins lay before us! What could be more grand?

And if you are in the SoCal area, I highly encourage you to check out the lovely Tanaka Farms! Plus, parking and entry are free! Check out their website for more!

Do you have a favorite pumpkin patch?

Watch the First Five Minutes of American Horror Story, Premiering Tonight!

American Horror Story premieres on FX tonight at 10 PM PT, and from what I've seen it actually looks halfway decent! Unfortunately, I don't have cable so I'll be eagerly awaiting its release on DVD...until then, at least I can console myself with a cool sneak peak of the first five minutes of tonight's premiere!

Check it out below!

They also pulled off some great "House Calls" on people who signed up to have American Horror Story'sAmerican Horror Story freaky fetishist from the poster above come scare them! Just check out the YouTube page for more vids!

Are you watching American Horror Story tonight? If so, what did you think?

31 Days of Halloween: The Happy Haunting of America (2007) Documentary

Halloween is my favorite holiday, one that gets me giddier than I already am and truly brings out the kid in me (I think the extra sugar rush helps, too). Candy corn, caramel apples, some hot cider and a few spooky movies are all I need this time of year. Another staple of the season for me is a Halloween Haunt. Wherever you live, big city or small, you’re bound to have a local haunted house, cornfield, hayride, maze or amusement park. It just wouldn’t be Halloween without a trip to once of these haunts!

Which is why I was so delighted to receive Halloween…The Happy Haunting of America, a 2-disc DVD that celebrates everything Halloween-y!! It features tours of some of the best haunts in the United States, as well as interviews with horror celebrities like Doug Bradley (Pinhead from Hellraiser), Angus Scrimm (The Tall Man in the Phantasm films), Tony Todd (Candyman), Robert Englund (most famous for playing Freddy Krueger in Nightmare on Elm Street), Don Coscarelli (director of Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), Christa Campbell (2001 Maniacs, Death by Engagement, Hallow’s Point), John Gulager (director of Feast), special FX maestro Tom Savini, shock rocker Alice Cooper and so on.

The documentary is hosted by Daniel Roebuck and Bob Burns, no strangers to the horror and sci-fi businesses. Both are hardcore Halloween fans, and take a very fun approach to the spooky season! The original documentary that was released ten years ago is covered on disc one, complete with a Dr. Shocker intro that pays homage to the midnight movie monster and mad doctor TV hosts of yesteryear. The documentary has been remastered, and on disc two one can find a bonus 10th anniversary version, complete with ten new haunts and a tour of The Magic Castle in Hollywood.

My favorite parts of the documentary were the interviews with horror icons where they shared childhood Halloween stories. Hearing about their favorite costumes, how they trick ‘r’ treated and what the holiday meant to them was just plain FUN! I also enjoyed the segment on Don Post Studios and the other mask makers that were featured. The story of how long they’ve been around and how they got started was fascinating!

I found the weakest part of the film to be the presentation of the haunts. There was a quick intro for each, but instead of telling us more about each individual haunt, there is just music over the scenes. I really wish filmmakers Chuck Williams and Daniel Roebuck had decided to go more in-depth with each haunt. Just watching scenes of spooky characters and places set only to music got really repetitive after a while, no matter how cool each haunt looked.

Except for a few shoddy production values, that was my only complaint and I wholeheartedly enjoyed this documentary and all its extra features. Those that adore Halloween will definitely dig this DVD, but even the more casual viewer will fall into the Halloween spirit with the help from The Happy Haunting of America!

31 Days of Halloween: New Women's Halloween 2011 Costumes I Want

I was browsing Spirit Halloween's new 2011 women's costumes, and besides a few lame ones (they are still selling Jersey Shore costumes??), I found some pretty neat-o ones!! I already have ideas for my costume this year (check out my previous post), but any of these would be a cool alternative.

I love this!! Not only do I love Edward Scissorhands, but the aesthetics of this costume are so beautiful to me!

I absolutely loved Sucker Punch (I think I may have been the only one), and I adore this sailor-inspired costume. It may not seem like something I would be drawn to, but it just is!

This is so cute and if it was nicer quality I would definitely wear this for more than just Halloween!

I just can't resist a sexy, blood-splattered zombie costume.

Or a creepy, blood-splattered zombie costume!

What are some costumes you would like to wear for Halloween?

31 Days of Halloween: Trick or Treat (1986)

To get in the Halloween spirit, I decided to watch the festively named Trick or Treat, the one that features Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons in cameo roles. Trick or Treat isn’t a great movie by any means, but it has a certain spellbinding charm that keeps it entertaining, and not just for metalheads.

Eddie (Marc Price, or “Skippy” from Family Ties as most people remember him) is a metalhead outcast at his high school. The jocks always pick on him and pull cruel pranks on him, like pushing him naked out into the school gym when the girl’s volleyball team is practicing. His outlet for all his anger and pent-up frustration is metal music, and his idol is rock star Sammi Curr (Tony Fields). When Sammi dies in a hotel fire, Eddie is devastated. A radio DJ (Gene Simmons) gives Eddie the studio master of Sammi’s unreleased record to cheer him up. After playing the record backwards, Eddie unwittingly unleashes the spirit of Sammi. At first, Eddie finds Sammi to be useful at getting revenge on the jocks, but soon realizes Sammi is evil. Sammi becomes more and more powerful until he materializes in the flesh on Halloween night to raise hell…

Trick or Treat was quite a surprise and I really found myself enjoying it. Though there aren’t any scares, its entertainment value alone makes it worth watching. The story is pretty original and I love how the filmmakers took a look at metal music and the big controversy that surrounded it in the ‘80s.

My one big gripe with the film was the poor pacing at the beginning. The first 30 – 45 minutes just crawl by and consist of scenes of Eddie being tormented at school, then getting home and blaring his metal music, then going back to school and being hassled again and returning home to listen to more metal in his gloomy room, rinse, repeat…you get the idea. I think just one scene of this would have elicited enough sympathy for Eddie at which point we could have gotten to the real action of the film.

The real action doesn’t start until somewhere around the one-hour mark, when Sammi is finally unleashed and starts strutting around, zapping people. My favorite part is when Sammi crashes the high school’s Halloween dance and puts on a killer performance – literally! He shoots electrical charges out of his guitar that basically pulverize his victims. He can also move through electrical currents and can get you pretty much anywhere there’s electricity.

The logistics, as well as the how’s and why’s of Sammi’s satanic, electrifying ways are never quite explained, but that niggling little problem is easily quieted by the overall fun you’ll have watching this flick. Besides a few unexplained, illogical plot points and a slow start, the film’s story (by Rhet Topham, with the screenplay written by Joel Soisson, Michael S. Murphey and Rhet Topham) is actually quite inventive. I mean, where else could you find an outcast metalhead conjuring up his dead rock star idol with a satanic ritual, causing irreparable harm to the neighborhood on Halloween? Not to mention all the killer ‘80s hair metal fashion – leather, chains, piercings, tattoos, and who can for get the big, frizzy, poofy hair!

The music, performed mainly by Fastway, is actually pretty good. It’ll put you in that metal state of mind! And, of course, the cameos by Ozzy Osbourne (as a conservative, religious/political pundit speaking out against metal music on TV) and Gene Simmons (as a radio DJ) are pretty enjoyable as well!

Surprisingly, the acting (even by Osbourne and Simmons) is well done. Marc Price plays a convincing teenager that’s fed up with the status quo and the mainstream. He is very relatable and I know many people (myself included) can relate to him and what he is going through in high school. I also loved Tony Fields’ portrayal of Sammi Curr…he completely nails it and had me checking on IMDB to see if he really was a rock star! He is just that good!

For a nostalgic kick, Trick or Treat is a fun movie that’ll take you back to hair metal’s heyday. Don’t expect any scares, but you’ll definitively be entertained by Trick or Treat’s music and unique story.

Metalhead or not, Trick or Treat is a definite horror movie treat!

31 Days of Halloween: Tim Burton Exhibit at LACMA

I thought the perfect way to kick off October and the Halloween season was to check out the Tim Burton exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibit has been open since May, but I knew it would be so much more fun if I attended October 1st so I could have a proper, spectacular kick-off to the spooky season!

Mister Spooky and I arrived at the museum on a warm Saturday morning (it still feels like summer in SoCal!) and quickly purchased our tickets with ghoulish glee. Since we got there fairly early, there was no wait, though the actual exhibit was a bit crowded. I didn't care though, I was just in awe of all the amazing Burton art around me! Mister Spooky probably got quite sick of me squealing like a schoolgirl and grinning ear-to-ear every time we entered a different room!

Tim Burton's "Balloon Boy" at LACMA

From the LACMA site:

Tim Burton was born in Burbank in 1958. After studying at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), he worked as an animator at the Walt Disney Studios before breaking out on his own. Taking inspiration from popular culture, fairy tales and traditions of the gothic, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of a personal vision.

The exhibition brings together over 700 drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, storyboards, puppets, concept artworks, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera, including art from a number of unrealized and little-known personal projects. Many of these objects come from the artist's own archive, as well as from studio archives and private collections of Burton's collaborators. Hundreds of never-before-exhibited artworks and sketches will be joined by a selection of film posters accompanied by music composed for the exhibition by Burton's longtime collaborator Danny Elfman.

We spent about an hour to an hour in a half wandering through the exhibit (and doubling back and re-wandering through again!). I loved looking at all of Burton's handwritten notes, like the one detailing the plot to Beetlejuice! I also loved all the puppets and maquettes they had on display from his various films...I wish I could take them all home with me! The highlight of the show was the art from a Burton project that never came to fruition, called Trick or Treat (I REALLY wish they would make this!). I hoped they would be selling prints of these works, but no luck!

Tim Burton - untitled (Trick or Treat)

This was a well curated exhibit that showed Burton's versatile yet signature style and covered the majority of his projects! I left a happy camper (and I couldn't resist picking up a few things from the gift shop) and if you adore Tim Burton or are just in the mood for something spooky this October, I highly encourage you to attend this special exhibit! It's only on through October 31st, so make sure to go soon!

And I highly recommend getting there early, as the exhibit fills up fast and there can be a pretty long wait to get in if you show up mid-day.

Check out some pics of the exhibit below (you were not allowed to take photos in the exhibit, so these are from around the web and I don't claim ownership of them):

31 Days of Halloween: Halloween 2011 Events in Orange County

Happy October 1st, fiends! Today kicks off my 31 Days of Halloween (check out last year's Halloween posts!), where I will be attempting to post a Halloween-related post every day of October for Countdown to Halloween's annual blogging marathon!

For my first post, I've made a list of some spooky events occurring around Orange County, California, where I currently reside. Of course, the L.A. area has a TON of events, but to narrow it down I've elected to just post about some events closer to my home.

Please note this isn't an all-inclusive list, but rather events that have caught my eye! I'll be adding more to this list as I find out about more events, too! If you know of any other events in the area, please let me know in the comments below!

Fullerton Haunted Walking Tours
(Fullerton, CA)

A hauntingly good time is in the offing when the Fullerton Museum Center’s popular “Haunted Fullerton Walking Tours” return for their 11th season in September.

Tours will be given Wednesday and Thursday evenings Sept. 14 through Nov. 3, with a special Halloween tour planned Oct. 31. Due to popularity, the tours book up fast, and persons interested in participating are strongly advised to get their registrations in early.

Considered to be one of the most haunted cities in Orange County, Fullerton will serve up a variety of “spirited” locations to take in during the tours.Locations visited can vary and may include the landmark Plummer Auditorium, where the spirits of Louis E. Plummer and one known only as the “angry woman” are said to watch the shows presented there; the historic California Hotel, now Villa del Sol; and the home of Fullerton’s first woman auto dealer. Even Fullerton’s Police Department apparently is not without its own reported hauntings, and will be one of the locations visited on the tours.

Ghost Ship
(Newport Beach, CA)

GHOST SHIP is the first haunted attraction in the country that actually sets sail into the dark, open ocean…at night. The Attraction is comprised of three floors of highly interactive content. The gut of the ship will bring the poor souls through the abandoned hallways of what once was the treatment deck for those in need of Electro Shock Therapy, Hydrotherapy, and Sleep Disorder Rehabilitation as well as the old examination rooms and even morgue. The middle floor will appear to provide a moment of calm where patrons can grab a cocktail and take in the old ballroom vibe of the 1930′s. However, appearances can be incredibly deceiving. Lastly, the top deck will bring gluttons for punishment through an interactive execution experience that just may make them wonder “who” is actually getting executed. This will be an experience you will not want to miss if you are someone with a high tolerance for fear.

Monster Massive
(Irvine, CA)

America's largest Halloween dance music festival returns on Saturday October 29th, 2011 with an exclusive U.S. appearance of Armin Van Buuren's "Armin Only Mirage" show on the "Tomb of Doom" main stage all night. The "House of Horror" will feature Erick Morillo, Moby and much more TBA.
