Dead Ringers Drive-In Coming to Orange County

Is Orange County getting its own drive-in movie theater?! That's what it looks like, at least if Dead Ringers Ride and Drive-In gets enough support to open its gates this fall!

With Dead Ringers Ride and Drive-In, founders Amy Hood, Lindsey Bro and Jennifer Hood want to create a monthly event that features classic cult films, food trucks and concession stands, live bands, carnival rides and a fun, retro atmosphere, all tucked away in the scenic foothills of Orange County.

Just check out the description from their website:
Dead Ringers Ride and Drive-In will be a monthly drive-in movie theater in Orange County, CA. Founded by local Orange Countians Amy Hood, Lindsey Bro and Jennifer Hood, Dead Ringers will feature cult classic and classic films, delicious fare from local food trucks, movie snacks, beverages, and beer. Pre-show festivities will include live music from epic local bands, carnival rides, classic cars and motorcycles from the Hubcat Originals, and a Dead Ringers photo booth.

Dead Ringers Ride and Drive-In will be set against the backdrop of ruggedly beautiful Santiago Canyon on the grounds of Oak Canyon Ranch. Located in Orange County just off the 5, the 241, or 261, it’s close enough to be convenient while still feeling miles away from the fast paced hubbub of Orange County. Think 1950s cinema escapism with a modern twist.

While watching the feature film on our 4 story-high movie screen, you can steal glances of the eerie moon looming over Irvine Lake, count the twinkling stars above, watch cooing lovers floating in love boats on the miniature fishing lake, hear the distant growl of motorcycles winding around the canyon roads to the ranch, or listen to the faint laughter from the ferris wheel. Before settling down to the feature, stroll over to the concessions area and grab a bite from one of the four featured food trucks. While you’re at it grab an ice cold beer or Coca-cola and catch a live set from our lineup of killer local bands. On the way back to your ride, impress your date by talking shop with the moto enthusiasts lined up with their classic cars and bikes. Then turn on the engine, tune into our FM transmitted station, and drop out into the pre show retro playlist and subsequent cult classic reel.
Tickets are on sale now for the grand opening, where they will be showing the classic The Lost Boys! How cool is that?!

They need your help to make this happen, though! They need to sell at least 1/2 their tickets to show there is real interest in this project, so please visit their website and their Indiegogo to pre-purchase tickets for the event! There are even some extra goodies for people that pitch in extra!

Halloween 2012 at Home Goods

Soon after blogging about my first sightings of Halloween items at Michael's stores, I realized that other stores may be stocking their shelves with Halloween goodies and decided to venture out to (hopefully) discover other spooky decor!

I headed to Home Goods, which, like Michael's, usually starts putting out its Halloween stock in late July/early August and was rewarded by the beginnings of their autumn items. They mostly had kitschy, glittery Halloween decor more suited for The Real Housewives of Orange County rather than this spooky chick, but I will return once they have more in stock.

I didn't end up buying anything, but I did snap some pics of their stock:

Creepy busts, pumpkins and skulls

Pretty owl snow globe

The coolest thing I saw - a lantern with anatomical
drawings of skulls and spines on it!

Purple

Orange

Festive top hats

Buggy pumpkins and a glittery skull

Me!

 Love the green and black

 Orange and black

 Boo!

They had some cool vintage-looking toys!

The weirdest thing I saw - unfinished paper mache skulls

Food Review: Trader Joe's Chocolate Coconut Milk Frozen Dessert

Ok, I know that this stuff has been out for a while, but for one reason or another I had just never picked it up. However, with the temperatures soaring this past week (and continuing to climb) I decided it was the perfect time to try Trader Joe's Coconut Milk Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (they couldn't just call it ice cream?).

I love coconut milk-based ice creams and have had my fair share of them, but this vegan treat from Trader Joe's is among the best I've ever had! The chocolate is rich and flavorful and the texture is smooth and velvety. There is just something different about this frozen dessert that places it head and shoulders above other chocolate coconut milk-based vegan ice creams I've had! You can really taste the quality and the only way I can think to describe it is that it tastes fancy!

My only problem with the dessert? Well, it was hard to stop eating once I started!

If you have a Trader Joe's near you and are looking for a delectable frozen treat to keep cool you down, I highly recommend you pick up a pint of Trader Joe's Chocolate Coconut Milk Frozen Dessert!

Halloween 2012 at Michael's

Well, after desperately waiting for my local Michael's craft store to stock Halloween items, I was ecstatic to finally find the store decorated for my favorite time of year this week! They had autumnal foliage, Lemax's Spooky Town miniatures, fall-scented candles and lots of Halloween decorations gracing their shelves (with more to come).

I snapped a few pics of what they had in stock for Halloween 2012:

Lottsa Halloween signs

Lemax cuteness!

I really, really wanted this Lemax Cemetery Tours Hearse,
but at $24.99 it was too pricey :(

Lottsa cute potion bottles! I, of course, love the bat ones,
but the "Devastation Prevention Potion" was pretty cool too!

Freaky Frankie magnetic game...just $1 and they had
a bunch of different ones - ghost, witch, pumpkin, etc.

More potion bottles - I never buy any (just make my own)
but I do love the pretty colors and clever labels!

Bedazzled scarab skulls

I wish they had this in human-sizes, but this was just
a pet costume!

I normally abhor anything glittery for Halloween,
but since this was batty and just had a bit of black
glitter, I couldn't resist!

Skellies! I want to take them all home w/ me!

Michael's is usually one of the first stores to stock Halloween items, but it seems mine in particular waited until the beginning of August to start putting spooky stuff out as opposed to a few years ago when it when up in mid-July!

Better late than never, though, and I was happy to just see Halloween stuff out! I can't wait until they are fully stocked!

OPI So So Skullicious Halloween 2012 Collection

Shades from left to right: Hi, Pumpkin!, A-Rose from the Dead, Morning Glory, Candlelight

OPI recently announced their Halloween 2012 collection, which is Dia de los Muertos-themed! I love the colorful packaging of their minis above, though I wish it was a little less girly and a bit darker like last year's Spookettes collection.

Here is what OPI's official Facebook page says about their So So Skullicious 2012 Halloween collection:

Celebrate the lives of the dearly departed with OPI’s festive Dia de los Muertos-inspired shades, arriving just in time for Halloween, for a limited time only. The new So So Skullicious mini pack includes four mini lacquers in supernaturally bright and bold orange, pink, yellow and black hues.

For you vegans or cruelty-free shoppers out there, there is a lot of discussion over whether OPI's nail polishes are in fact cruelty-free and vegan. For what I gather from various online resources, their nail polish is vegan, however they were acquired by Coty, a parent company that does test on animals (though, as far as I can tell, OPI itself does not test on animals). So depending on how you feel about that may influence your decision to purchase this collection.
